Entrepreneurial Spirit is Alive & Well at the Cook Household!
by Terri Cook
This week I would like to talk with you about The Spirit of the Entrepreneur.
Is it a learnt behaviour or is it something that comes naturally, that we all have as children???
I would argue Yes! That it is very much an inherent skill in all of us as children.
Let me explain why in a story…
For those of you in Australia, it’s Summer and for the last 8 – 10 weeks children around Australia have been celebrating the school holidays and relaxing and enjoying the summer fun.
In the Cook house at least, it has released the whole Entrepreneurial Streak.
The children decided they wanted more money (over and above their pocket money from weekly chores). So they set about working out what they could do…
What “need” could they fill for people of which they already had the resources for??? (obviously with no capital!)
So they had a “Big Business Meeting” looking at all the things in the house and yard that could be sold without their mother (that’s me) having a melt down about what they are up to.
What they came up with was truly amazing!!!!! You see, we have stone pebbles around our pool and all throughout the base of it and sometimes these pebbles come loose and collect in the filter and at the base of the pool. So, my clever little vegemites decided that these were the same pebbles used in fish ponds and tanks. So guess what they did. They started to collect all the loose pebbles around the outside and at the base of the pool and the filter and put them into a big bag and decided who they could see or market them to.
So they found something of use, something people need and they collected and decided to market and sell their product .
These are some of the places they came up with to sell them to:
- Family and friends with pools and fish ponds and fish tanks (always go for the family 1st – uncles and aunts have tremendous guilt. LOL)
- Aquariums who sell pebbles – they even thought of painting the pebbles so that they had a variety of different colours to appeal to different people
- They asked me to take them to the local aquarium so that they could see how much the pebbles were selling for and how many you could get for what price. Then they decided to price them accordingly.
BUT HERE’S THE THING…
They decided to expand their market base by offering the pebbles not just to the obvious markets – they decided they would sell them to people for their stone pathways and driveways and day spas and all sorts of things…
Now, they had nowhere near enough pebbles to do this BUT that didn’t stop them from looking and working out all the possibilities of how they could market and make more money for themselves.
When was the last time you did that as an adult??? As adults, our first thought is generally “oh, I can’t do that!!” We look for reasons why we can’t do it rather than HOW CAN WE do something??
The kids didn’t have that limitation! That limiting belief had not yet been planted in their heads.
The whole process of watching them plan their “Pebble Empire” with nothing more than an iceblock, some loose pebbles, having fun and enjoying playing in the pool was transforming.

HOMEPLAY TIME
So your assignment for this week…
Have a look back over your life – What did you do when you were a kid that you don’t do now?
What was your “Pebble Empire” or “lemonade stand” or newspaper run when you were a kid??
When did you decide that you couldn’t??
What can you adapt as your “Pebble Empire” Now! What skills do you have that you can adapt. Don’t re-invent the wheel. Use what you already have!!
Now practise wiping that “can’t” out of your thinking and vocab in your Biz.
Start focussing on what you WANT – NOT what you DON’T WANT!!!
It’s time to be a kid again!!!
Not sure how to do that??
